Eligibility criteria

  • Language and Countries: English language proficiency required; open to applicants from all countries.
  • Supported Ventures:
    • Researchers looking to start a company from a university.
    • Recent graduates wanting to launch a startup.
    • International PhD students in the UK interested in starting a spinout or startup.
  • Key Eligibility Factors:
    • Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 4 or higher.
    • Equity investment in the business less than £500,000.
    • Protectable innovation with ownership or co-ownership of intellectual property (IP).
    • Highest equity stake held within the founding team.
    • Current or aspiring CEO/COO role.
  • Additional Requirements:
    • For startups: Not a student or employed elsewhere during the program; completed first university degree by July 1, 2018.
    • For spinouts: Currently employed by the university.
    • Relevant PhD viva conducted by November 30, 2023.

Application Process

The application process consists of two stages:

Stage One: Eligibility Screening (60 minutes)

  • Briefly describe yourself and your engineering innovation.
  • This stage assesses whether you meet the program’s eligibility criteria and if your idea aligns with the program’s goals.

Stage Two: Detailed Application (1-3 days)

  • If you pass Stage One, you will be invited to complete a more in-depth application.
  • Provide detailed information about yourself, your team (if applicable), the technology behind your innovation, and your business model.
  • This stage focuses on your idea’s strength and entrepreneurial potential.
  • A panel of experts will review your Stage Two application.
  • If shortlisted, you will be invited for an interview.
