There are multiple important rules for the use of pronouns in English. In this blog post, we will discuss rules for use of pronouns with the help of examples.

1: Use the nomination case as the subject of a finite verb.

For example โ€œHe is taller than I.โ€ I is the subject of am (understood). โ€œExplain the situation to whoever comes first.โ€ whoever the subject is of comes, not the object of the preposition to.

For example โ€œHe is the man who we believe should be elected.โ€ Who is the subject of should be elected, not the object of belief.

2: Use the Nominative case after the various forms of the linking verb be (was, were, is, are, have been, ets.)

โ€œIt was he who called.โ€

โ€œThe leaders were Ali, Adeel, Asad, Shahid, and I.

โ€œWe are certain it is they.โ€

3: Use the possessive case to modify a gerund.

โ€œWe objected to is leavingโ€

โ€œMaindadโ€™s losing the ball stopped the game.โ€

โ€œI am certain of their having been there.โ€

4: Use the objective case for the object of a verb.

โ€œI invited Saadia and him.โ€

โ€œShe likes Shahid better than me. โ€œMe is the object of she likes (understood).

โ€œWhom did you see?โ€ Whom the object is of did see.

โ€œGive the dictionary to whomever you see. โ€œWhoever is the object of see?

5: Use the object case for the object of a preposition.

โ€œShe gave the dictionary to Saadia and me.โ€

โ€œThey were all there except him.โ€

โ€œThree of us boys went camping in Abbottabad.โ€

6: Pronouns-Number: use a singular pronoun to refer to the indefinite words anyone, either, everyone, each every, nobody.

โ€œEveryone should have is own dictionary.โ€

โ€œEach one of the girls read her essay.โ€

โ€œIf anyone wishes help, he must ask for it.โ€

โ€œNeither of the boys could express his ideas.โ€
