The olfactory pathway synapses in the olfactory bulb, which is a structure located in the anterior cranial fossa. The olfactory bulb is not considered part of the thalamus.

The first-order neurons of the olfactory pathway are located in the olfactory epithelium, which is a specialized tissue lining the roof of the nasal cavity.

The axons of these neurons project directly to the olfactory bulb, which is a structure located in the anterior cranial fossa. The olfactory bulb is not considered part of the thalamus.

The second-order neurons of the olfactory pathway project from the olfactory bulb to the olfactory cortex, which is located in the temporal lobe.

The other sensory pathways all synapse in the thalamus before projecting to the cerebral cortex. The thalamus is a relay station for sensory information. it plays an important role in the processing and interpretation of sensory stimuli.
