Where Is DNA Found In Eukaryotic Cells?

In eukaryotic cells, DNA is found in the nucleus, which is the control center of the cell. It is also present in mitochondria, the power house of the cell, and in chloroplasts in plant cells.

DNA in Eukaryotic Cell

In a eukaryotic cell, DNA is located in following organelles:

1.  Nucleus

In eukaryotic cells, the majority of DNA is located in the cell nucleus. The DNA in the nucleus is organized into structures called chromosomes.

2.  Mitochondria

Mitochondria is also known as the powerhouses of the cell, also contain their own DNA. This mitochondrial DNA is separate from the nuclear DNA. It is inherited solely from the mother.

e.g DNA is present in the mitochondria of Neurospora crassa. [1]

3.  Chloroplasts

In plant cells, chloroplasts, which are responsible for photosynthesis, also have their own DNA. Similar to mitochondrial DNA, chloroplast DNA is separate from nuclear DNA and inherited from the mother plant.
