What is the full form of DGP, DSP, SP, ASP, ACP?

The full forms for these ranks in the Indian police system are:

  • DGP – Director General of Police: The highest-ranking police officer in a state or union territory.
  • DSP – Deputy Superintendent of Police: A senior police officer who assists the Superintendent of Police and manages authorized police stations.
  • SP – Superintendent of Police: Heads all the constables and police officers of a district (non-metropolitan or urban).
  • ASP – Assistant Superintendent of Police:
    • For IPS officers: Their starting rank, considered a probationary period until their second year.
    • For State Police Services officers: A rank they can hold after DSP.
  • ACP – Assistant Commissioner of Police: A high-ranking police officer, typically in charge of a police subdivision in a city.
