Eligibility Criteria
- Citizenship: Permanent residents of Canada, Canadian citizens, and foreign citizens are all eligible.
- Degree Level: Applicants must be pursuing their first doctoral degree (PhD). This includes joint programs like MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, or JD/PhD, but only if they have a significant research component. Funding is provided solely for the PhD portion of the program.
- Study Progress: Applicants cannot have completed more than 20 months of doctoral studies by May 1, 2024.
- Nomination: You must be nominated by a Canadian university with a quota to host Vanier scholars.
- Study Plans: You must intend to pursue full-time doctoral studies (or a qualifying joint program) at the nominating institution in the following summer semester or academic year after results are announced. Again, only the PhD portion is eligible for funding.
- Previous Scholarships: You cannot currently hold, or have previously held, a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.
- Academic Record: You must have achieved a first-class average (as defined by your institution) in each of the last two years of full-time study. If unsure about your institution’s definition, contact them directly.
