Who can apply?
- Doctoral students enrolled in year one, two, or three (starting year three in September 2024 or later) of a full-time program in humanities or social sciences (broadly defined).
- Your research must address one of the Foundation’s four themes: Human Rights & Dignity, Responsible Citizenship, Canada & the World, or People & the Natural Environment.
- Citizenship:
- Canadian citizens studying anywhere (Canada or abroad)
- Non-Canadians (permanent residents or foreign nationals) enrolled in a Canadian doctoral program

Ready to Apply? Here’s Your Guide
- Check Your University’s Deadline: Each university has its own application deadline, so make sure you submit yours well before that date.
- Create an Account: When the application period opens, head to the Foundation’s portal and register for an account. You’ll receive login details by email.
- Complete the Application: Once logged in, navigate to the “Draft” section to fill out the application form. Don’t forget to update your contact information too.
- Gather Recommendations: Provide names and emails of two referees who can submit recommendation letters directly through the portal in PDF format. Follow up with them to ensure timely submission.
- Upload Transcripts: Combine transcripts from all your post-secondary education into a single PDF document (excluding CEGEP transcripts for Quebec applicants).
- Inform Your University: Let your university’s awards officer know you’ve applied to ensure your application is included in their selection process.
- Apply Directly: Universities don’t nominate candidates anymore. All applications submitted by the December 2nd, 5 PM EST deadline will be reviewed by the Foundation. They value diversity in their selection process.
