Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria.

Qualities & Commitment:

  • Demonstrated research leadership and strong academic performance.
  • High potential for success in relevant fields.
  • Commitment to collaborative research with supervisors and the university.
  • Ability to effectively implement AI research techniques.

Degree Completion:

  • Completion of your PhD by January 1, 2021 (standard deadline).
  • Extended deadline of January 2020 for applicants with significant career disruptions within two years of PhD completion (medical reasons, parental leave, family obligations, or COVID-19 research delays).

International Applicants:

  • PhD completion required before the program start date.

Canadian Applicants:

  • PhD completion required within six months of starting the program.

Fellowship:

  • Cannot hold a concurrent postdoctoral fellowship with the Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science program. Resignation from current fellowship required.

Academic Background:

  • Degree in a natural science or engineering (NSE) field like mathematics or computer science (refer to NSERC Research Subject Codes for details).

Supervision:

  • Requires a full-time University of Toronto supervisor (status-only or budgeted).
  • Co-supervisor with AI expertise required if the primary supervisor lacks AI experience.
  • Strong academic record.
