Difference Between Earthing And Grounding
The main difference between earthing and grounding is that in earthing we connect the non-current carrying part of the circuit is connected to the earth directly. But in grounding the current-carrying part of the circuit is connected with the ground. In this article, we will briefly discuss the difference between earthing and grounding.
Earthing
The ‘earthing’ is a way to ground the device from the earth so it’s less likely to be affected by any interference.
If a fault occurs in the system, then the potential of the non-current part of the equipment raises, and if any human or stray animal touches the body of the equipment, then they may get shocked.
The leakage of the electric current to the earth is discharged through this earthing. We may be able to avoid electric shock by using this method. Our home appliances are also protected from lightning strikes.
To achieve the earthing, we need to connect the parts of the installation to the earth using an earth conductor. At some distance below the ground level, it is placed in the soil.
Grounding
Grounding is a method in which the current-carrying parts of the circuit are connected to the ground directly. Grounding protects the power system equipment from damage. It provides the return path for the leakage current.
When a fault occurs in the equipment, the current in the equipment becomes unbalanced. The fault current is discharged into the ground to make the system balanced.
The grounding has several advantages, one of them being that it eliminates the surge voltage. The service reliability is improved by the grounding of the equipment.
Difference Between Earthing and Grounding
There is some key difference between earthing and grounding.
Earthing | Grounding |
---|---|
The earthing is a way to ground the device from the earth so it’s less likely to be affected by any interference. | Grounding is a method in which the current-carrying parts of the circuit are connected to the ground directly. |
It protects humans and animals from electric shock. | It protects the entire electric circuit from malfunction. |
The electric potential is zero. | It does not contain any potential. |
It is directly connected to the earth. | It is connected between the equipment and the ground. |
The color of the earth wire is green. | The color of the ground wire is black. |
