Key Difference

Rigidity and spasticity are both symptoms of abnormal muscle tone, but differ in their characteristics. Rigidity is a constant stiffness or inflexibility in the muscles, independent of the speed of movement. Spasticity, however, is characterized by a velocity-dependent increase in muscle tone, where muscles stiffen more when moved rapidly.

Comparative Analysis

  1. Muscle Tone Response:
    • Rigidity: Constant, not dependent on movement speed.
    • Spasticity: Increases with faster movement.

Recognizing the differences between rigidity and spasticity is important in diagnosing and treating various neurological conditions, as each presents unique challenges in muscle movement and control.
