Lahore Schools will remain closed on August 26 due to Data Ganj Bakhsh’s Urs
Lahore—The Punjab government has declared a local holiday in Lahore on August 26, 2024, to celebrate the urs (death anniversary) of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh. This means that all public and private schools in the city will be closed on that day.
The holiday has been announced in a notification issued by the Services and General Administration Department. In addition to schools, government offices in Lahore will also be closed, except for a few essential departments.
The urs is a significant event in Lahore, held annually to honor Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh, a respected Sufi saint and scholar from the 11th century. The celebrations, which start on August 24, include prayers, poetic recitations, and Qawwali music at the Data Darbar shrine, one of the largest Sufi shrines in South Asia.
With August 26 falling on a Monday, students will enjoy a long weekend, as schools are already closed on Saturdays and Sundays. The holiday provides an opportunity for the community to take part in the vibrant celebrations and reflect on the saint’s legacy of brotherhood and spirituality.
