Are there nine planets in the solar system? Justify!
Answer
No, because there are only eight recognized planets in our solar system. Pluto, once considered the ninth planet, was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
The IAU established new criteria for what constitutes a planet, which Pluto didn’t meet. These criteria include:
- A planet must orbit the Sun.
- It must have enough mass to be round due to its gravity.
- It must have cleared the neighborhood around its orbit, meaning it’s the dominant gravitational influence in its orbital path.
Pluto fails the third criterion. It shares its orbital neighborhood with other objects in the Kuiper Belt, a region of icy bodies beyond Neptune. While Pluto is massive enough to be round, it doesn’t exert enough gravitational dominance to be classified as a full planet.
