The Republican-led US House of Representatives has passed a bill restricting transgender students from participating in girls’ and women’s sports in federally funded schools and universities.

Key Provisions of the Bill

The legislation defines sex as “based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.” It bans transgender athletes from joining teams designated for women or girls.

Political Context

This bill comes amidst a larger culture war over LGBTQ rights. Republicans have focused on transgender issues, particularly in youth and sports, as part of their platform ahead of the 2024 election.

“House Republicans yet again stood up for women,” stated House Speaker Mike Johnson, emphasizing the importance of protecting fairness in women’s sports.

President-elect Donald Trump also pledged to end what he called “transgender lunacy.”

Challenges in the Senate

While the bill passed the House with 218 votes, including two from Democrats, it faces slim chances of clearing the Senate. Most legislation requires a 60-vote threshold in the upper chamber, which is unlikely to be met.

Advocacy Group Response

Equality California criticized the bill, calling it “yet another effort to deny transgender youth the dignity and respect they deserve.”

This legislation highlights the ongoing debate over gender norms, fairness, and inclusion in sports as transgender visibility grows in the United States.
