In Math, a variable is an alphabet or term that denotes an unknown value or unknown number, or unknown quantity. The variables are specially used in the case of algebra or algebraic expression.

For example, y+3=4 is a linear equation where y is a variable, where 3 and 4 are constants. The variable is a value that is not fixed that can be changed or according to the mathematical operation performed. Usually, in algebra, we express an unknown number using the term ‘x’ and ‘y’. But this is not particular, and we can use any alphabet.

Definition of Variable

In Math, a variable is an alphabet or term that denotes an unknown value or unknown number, or unknown quantity. The variables are specially used in the case of algebra or algebraic expression.

These variables can be any alphabet from a to z. Most commonly are used, as variables in equations‘ a’,’b’,’c’, ‘x’,’y’ and ‘z’ .The variable is a value that is not fixed that can be changed or according to the mathematical operation performed.

Example of variable

  • X+3=5
  • Y+4=12
  • 5X-2=3

In the above example, y, and x are called variables. Without x and y terms are called the constant.

Types of variables in math

The variables can be divided into two categories, namely

  • Dependent variable
  • Independent variable

Application of variable

Variables are not used in the field of Mathematics but also in distinct other fields for different purposes, such as:

  • Statistics
  • Research
  • Science
  • Programming
