# What is Descending Order Mean in Math?

In Mathematics, The arrangement of numbers from largest to smallest value is known as descending order, or decreasing order, In other words, when we arrange things from a higher value to a lower value, it is referred to as descending order. The opposite of descending order is the ascending order, let’s learn more about this concept in this article.

## What is Descending Order?

A pattern of numbers is in descending order when the numbers decrease in value. This means that the numbers are arranged from highest to lowest. In simple word, sorting information from highest to lowest is known as arranging it in descending order. A simple example would be if you were to arrange the numbers 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 from highest to lowest – this would be an example of descending order.

## Descending Order Symbol

The symbol used to write numbers in descending order is the greater than symbol, “>”. The open end will face the greater number while the pointed end will face the smaller number. When writing out a list of descending numbers, be sure to use the correct symbol so your reader will understand the order in which the numbers go.

For Example: numbers from 1 to 10 can be represented in this form using the descending symbol.

10 > 9 > 8 > 7 > 6 > 5 > 4 > 3 > 2 >1.

## Rules of Descending Order

Descending order can be achieved by starting with the largest number and counting down, rather than subtracting 1 from the larger numbers. For example, if you’re writing the numbers 10-1 in descending order, you would start with 10 and count down to 1 like this: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

There are a few things to keep in mind when working with numbers:

• Ensure that the numbers are in order from largest to smallest
• Always end with the smallest number

99, 101, 54, 87, 49, 34, 107, 89, 09, 16

Solution:

Arranging numbers in descending order means to place them from largest to smallest, like this:

107, 101, 99, 89, 87, 54, 49, 34, 16, 09.
