According to the Education Secretary, Mr. Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani, the Planning Commission has allocated Rs. 20.25 billion for the ministry in the new Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2024-25. This is a massive increase of nearly 140% compared to the Rs. 8.5 billion they received last year.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC), which oversees universities, has also had its budget restored to Rs. 65 billion for 2024-25. Earlier, the government had reduced HEC’s budget to only Rs. 25 billion. But now, with the full Rs. 65 billion, the HEC can continue providing necessary funds to universities across all provinces without any disruptions.

The HEC Chairman, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, confirmed that the Ministry of Finance has officially communicated this decision to him through a formal letter.

In addition to restoring HEC’s current budget, the Planning Commission has also brought back HEC’s development budget to Rs. 59 billion. Previously, this had been cut down to just Rs. 21 billion.

This massive increase in funding for education is a very positive step by the government. It shows their commitment to improving the quality of education in Pakistan at all levels – from schools to universities.

With more money available, the education ministry and HEC can invest in better facilities, resources, and programs to enhance learning opportunities for students across the country. This will help prepare Pakistan’s younger generation with the necessary skills and knowledge for future success.
