Punjab Plans Early Retirement for Teachers with Limited Educational Qualifications
The Punjab School Education Department has introduced a new retirement policy targeting teachers with educational qualifications up to matriculation. The move is part of an effort to enhance the quality of education in public schools by prioritizing a more qualified teaching workforce.
Key Details of the Policy
1. Focus on Teachers with Matric Education
The policy aims to prioritize the early retirement of teachers whose highest qualification is matriculation. This decision is expected to affect more than 3,000 teachers across the province.
2. Early Retirement Option
Teachers aged 50 or older will be offered the option of early retirement under the new framework. The policy is designed to provide flexibility while ensuring a smoother transition to a restructured workforce.
3. Data Collection Underway
The department has begun gathering data on teachers aged 50 and above to assess the scale of implementation.

To formalize the changes, the School Education Department has approached the Chief Secretary, seeking approval for amendments to the current retirement policy.
