Punjab Teachers Protest Pension and Benefits Cuts: “Economic Exploitation,” They Say
Hundreds of government employees, including school and college teachers, gathered outside the Punjab Civil Secretariat on Thursday to voice their strong opposition to the provincial government’s recent decision to reduce pensions, gratuity, and leave encashment benefits.
Organized Protest Led by AGEGA
The protest, spearheaded by the All Government Employees Grand Alliance Punjab (AGEGA), saw passionate speeches from its leaders. Ch Mukhtar Gujjar, AGEGA Lahore Division Chairman, alongside Khalid Javed Singhera, AGEGA Punjab Chairman, and other leaders like Ziaullah Niazi, accused the government of undermining the welfare of millions of employees in Punjab.
“Economic Devastation for Teachers and Employees”
Protest leaders condemned the reduction in employee benefits, claiming it would leave retirees in financial distress. They criticized the government for significantly increasing its own benefits—reportedly ninefold—while slashing those of employees by 50%.
“These measures are economic exploitation. Teachers and employees are the backbone of Punjab’s development, and treating them this way is unacceptable,” said Khalid Javed Singhera during the rally.
Demands and Threats of Wider Protests
The protesters demanded an immediate reversal of the government’s decisions, warning of intensified province-wide sit-ins on highways if their demands were not met.
Disruption to Traffic
The protest caused severe traffic congestion in key areas, including Lower Mall, The Mall, and surrounding roads, creating a significant inconvenience for commuters.
Looking Ahead
The government has yet to respond to the demands. With threats of further protests looming, the situation highlights growing tensions between the provincial administration and its employees. Many are now watching closely to see if the government will address the grievances or face escalated demonstrations in the coming days.
This protest underscores the critical need for balanced reforms that consider both fiscal policies and the well-being of employees who form the foundation of public services in Punjab.
