Artificial Intelligence (AI) – Types of AI

October 30, 2022

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the process of simulating human thinking and learning in machines. AI has been around since the 1950s and has grown exponentially over the years.

AI is currently being implemented in many industries including medicine, finance, law enforcement, military, transportation, manufacturing, agriculture, and education.

Four types of AI

  • Rule-based
  • Statistical
  • Neural networks
  • Evolutionary algorithms

Rule-based AI is based on preprogrammed rules that direct how decisions should be made.

Statistical AI uses data sets to make predictions about future events.

Neural network AI is similar to our brain where data is processed by artificial neurons and then distributed back out to other neurons.

Evolutionary algorithms use natural selection principles to evolve solutions over time.

Branches of AI

Artificial intelligence has many branches that are discussed below

Machine Learning

Machine Learning is the application of AI techniques to recognize patterns in data. The goal of machine learning is to teach computers how to learn without being explicitly programmed. In order to do this, data is fed into the system and the computer learns from its mistakes. Once the system becomes familiar with the data, it can begin making accurate predictions.

Deep Learning

Deep Learning is a subset of machine learning that focuses on using deep neural networks to solve problems.

Deep neural networks are multi-layered neural networks that mimic the way the brain works. Deep learning is useful for pattern recognition, video analysis, and image processing.

Computer Vision

Computer vision is the branch of AI that deals with visual perception. Computer vision is becoming increasingly important in our everyday lives.

From self-driving cars to facial recognition systems, computer vision is playing a major role in our daily interactions.

Robotics

Robotics is the study of designing intelligent robots. Robots have been used in industry for decades. However, recent advances in AI are leading to a rise in the popularity of robotics.

Most modern-day manufacturers rely heavily on robotic automation to increase efficiency and reduce costs. Recent advancements in robotics are geared toward safer and more effective industrial applications.
