The main difference between the cerebellum and the cerebrum is the difference of their functions. The cerebellum primarily controls movement and coordination, while the cerebrum is responsible for higher cognitive functions such as thinking, memory, and perception.

cerebellum vs cerebrum

The key differences between cerebrum and cerebellum are enlisted here;

CerebellumCerebrum
Cerebellum’s main functions are motor coordination, posture maintenance, and balance.The cerebrum’s main functions are sensory, motor, and higher mental functions.
It consists of 2 cerebellar hemispheres that are connected by peduncles to the brain stem.It is the largest of the central nervous system.
The cerebellum is not always associated with memory.It consists of 2 cerebral hemispheres with 4 lobes on each hemisphere.
The size is smaller than the cerebrum.It is the largest of the central nervous system.
It helps in the coordination of motor activities.It helps in the planning and initiation of motor movements.
The cerebellum coordinates eye movements in response to a sensory stimulus.The cerebrum records and comprehends the visual stimulus.
It is located in the hindbrainIt is located in the forebrain
Their fibers (vermis) connect two sides of  hemispheresThe corpus callosum connects two side hemispheres.

Lobes and Function of cerebrum

Lobes of the brain (cerebrum)Functions of lobes
Occipital lobeIt helps in the processing of visual information.
Temporal lobeIt helps in the auditory process. It helps in short-term memory, speech, musical rhythm, and some degree of smell recognition.
Frontal lobeIt helps in personality characteristics, decision-making, movement Recognition of smell.
Parietal lobeIt helps in general sensation.
