# How to Find HCF by Listing Factor Method?

August 19, 2022 written by Azhar Ejaz

There are many methods to calculate the highest common factor of the given numbers. Irrespective of the method, the result to the HCF of the numbers would always be the same. There are three different methods to calculate the HCF of two numbers: HCF by listing factors method, HCF by prime factorization method, and HCF by division method.in this article how to find HCF by listing factor method.

## HCF by listing factor method

In this method, we list the factors of each number and determine the common factors of those numbers. Then, among the common factors, we calculate the highest common factor.

For example: find the highest common factors HCF of 10 and 16 by the listing factors method.

Solution:

Find the highest common factors HCF of 10 and 16 by the listing factor method.

Factors of 10 are:1,2,5,10

Factors of 16 are:1,2,4,8,16

Common factors of 10 and 16 are;1,2

The highest common factor of 10 and 16 are:2

HCF(10,16)=2

We will list factors 10 and 16. The factors of 10 are 1, 2, 5, 10, and the factors of 16 are 1, 2, 4,8,16, and 16. Clearly, 1 and 2  are the common factors of 10 and 16. But 2 is the highest of all the common factors. Hence, the HCF of 10 and 16 is 2.

For example:

Finding HCF of 8 and 12 by using the listing factors method.

Solution:

Finding HCF of 8 and 12 by using the listing factors method.

Factors of 8 are 1,2,4,and 8

Factors of12 are 1,2,3,4,6 and 12

Common factors of 8 and 12: 1,2 and 4

Highest common factor:4

HCF(8,12)=4
