Root System Diagram

  • Primary root: The first root to emerge from the seed, also known as the radicle. In the diagram, it’s the thickest root that grows straight down.
  • Secondary roots: Branching roots that come from primary roots. In the diagram, they are the thinner roots growing off the primary root.
  • Tertiary roots: Even finer roots that branch off the secondary roots. In this diagram, they are even thinner branches originating from the secondary roots.

Regions of Root Cap

  • Root cap: A thimble-shaped structure at the tip of the root, protecting it as it grows through the soil.
  • Region of cell division: Where new root cells are produced for growth and replacement of the root cap.
  • Region of maturation: Where root cells mature and differentiate into specialized cells for different functions.
  • Region of elongation: Where root cells elongate, pushing the root tip forward through the soil.
