A mini-computer is a small computer system designed for specific applications (e.g., desktop computers). As opposed to traditional personal computers (PCs) which are general-purpose devices intended for use by any user or organization, minis are optimized for particular tasks and may have features tailored toward those uses.

Minis tend to be smaller than PCs, typically weighing less than 5 pounds. A typical mini PC usually runs Windows Embedded Compact operating system, Linux, or Unix.

Why do we need a mini-computer?

You need a mini-computer if you want something portable to carry around with you, to access your business data while away from the office, and to share documents or images with people in your network. If you work from home then having a mini-computer at hand makes sure you can access your own files and edit them on the go. You can even connect a printer or scanner directly to the mini-computer using a USB cable.

Types of Mini Computers

Different types of mini computers are as follows:

Desktop Computer

Desktop computers are typically heavy, bulky machines capable of handling complex tasks. A desktop computer usually contains a central processing unit (CPU), memory, hard drive, and display screen.

One of the biggest advantages of having a desktop computer is how versatile it is it can handle tasks ranging from web browsing, multimedia editing, word processing, and even gaming. However, one major disadvantage of using a desktop computer is its size and weight, making it difficult to move around.

Smartphone

Smartphones have become more popular than ever before. Users rely on their smartphones for everything from keeping track of appointments to communicating with friends and family members. The most common phone model today is the iPhone, which is Apple’s first smart device.

Other commonly used models include Android phones, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and Nokia. With the variety of models available and the fact that many people carry them everywhere they go, smartphones have become indispensable devices.

iPad

The iPad is a tablet-style mobile computing device developed and marketed by Apple Inc. It was announced in April 2010 and released in November 2011. Its initial price was US$499 (AU$649). It has since been updated with several generations. The original iPad had a 9.7-inch diagonal LCD screen. In 2012, the iPad 2 was introduced.

It featured a larger 10.5-inch display as well as an improved processor speed. The third generation was introduced in December 2013 with an iSight camera and FaceTime HD video chat capabilities. In October 2015, Apple launched the fourth generation iPad Pro, featuring slimmer edges and faster performance.

Tablet

Tablets are portable versions of desktop computers. Unlike desktop computers, tablets do not need a keyboard or mouse. Tablets allow users to read eBooks and view multimedia content. Most tablets feature touchscreen technology and run on operating systems such as iOS and Android.

While some tablets offer basic applications, others can be loaded with software that makes them useful for specific purposes. Notable examples include the Kindle Fire, Nexus 7, Samsung Galaxy Tab series, and Microsoft Surface.
