2. Adult Stem Cells
Adult stem cells, also known as somatic or tissue-specific stem cells, are found in various tissues and organs throughout the body. They are responsible for maintaining and repairing tissue. Examples include:
- Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSCs) are example of adult stem cells, that are found in the bone marrow, HSCs give rise to all blood cell types, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
- Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) are stemm cells that are present in bone marrow, adipose tissue, and other connective tissues. They can differentiate into bone, cartilage, fat, and other cell types.
- Neural Stem Cells are example of adult stem cells that are found in the nervous system and can generate various types of neurons and glial cells.
- Epidermal Stem Cells: Located in the skin’s basal layer, epidermal stem cells help maintain and repair the skin’s outer layer.
3. Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs)
Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are adult cells, typically skin or blood cells, that have been reprogrammed to return to a pluripotent state, similar to embryonic stem cells. iPSCs have the potential to differentiate into many cell types and hold promise for regenerative medicine and disease modeling.
4. Umbilical Cord Stem Cells
Umbilical cord stem cells are collected from the umbilical cord and placenta after childbirth. They include:
- Cord Blood Stem Cells are example of hematopoietic stem cells, which can be used for bone marrow transplantation to treat various blood disorders.
- Wharton’s Jelly Stem Cells are Found in the umbilical cord’s connective tissue, these cells may have therapeutic potential for various conditions.
5. Dental Pulp Stem Cells
Stem cells in dental pulp are located within the pulp of teeth and have the potential to differentiate into dental and non-dental tissues, making them a subject of interest for regenerative dentistry.
6. Cardiac Stem Cells
Cardiac stem cells are found in the heart and contribute to cardiac tissue repair. They have the potential to differentiate into cardiomyocytes and other cell types.
