Microorganisms are the organisms that can be seen with naked eye. They are also known as microscopic organisms. Bacteria, Viruses, Fungi, Protozoa are some examples of microorganisms.

Here are 31 examples of microorganisms:

Bacteria

  1. Escherichia coli (E. coli)-Common gut bacteria, some strains are pathogenic.
  2. Streptococcus-Includes species responsible for strep throat.
  3. Mycobacterium tuberculosis-Causes tuberculosis (TB).
  4. Clostridium botulinum-Produces the toxin responsible for botulism.
  5. Salmonella-Known for causing food poisoning.
  6. Rhizobium-Forms symbiotic relationships with legumes, fixing nitrogen.
  7. Cyanobacteria-Photosynthetic bacteria also known as blue-green algae.
  8. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)-Used in biotechnology and organic farming for insect control.
  9. Lactobacillus-Found in yogurt and other fermented foods,
  10. Mycobacterium leprae-The bacterium responsible for causing leprosy (Hansen’s disease)

Archaea

11. Methanogens-Produce methane in anaerobic environments.

12. Halophiles-live in extremely salty environments like the Dead Sea.

13. Thermophiles-Live in high-temperature environments, such as hot springs.

Fungi

14. Saccharomyces cerevisiae-Baker’s yeast used in bread making.

15. Penicillium-Source of the antibiotic penicillin.
