Biomass energy is a potential source of renewable energy. It is a type of non-conventional energy. It includes all the organic materials such as crop residue, natural vegetation, trees animal dung, and sewage.

We all know that the sources of energy are either fossil fuels or solar energy, but did you know that biomass can also be an important source of energy?

Biomass is one of the primary sources of energy, which has been used for thousands of years and has played a key role in the advancement of mankind. Now, biomass is also one of the best and most efficient sources of renewable energy.

There are many types of energy sources in the world which are solar energy, tidal energy, and biomass. Biomass is a source of energy that is made up of living organisms. This includes food crops, animals, and human beings. There are many kinds of energy that are used in the world. The primary type of energy that is available in the market is fossil fuels like coal, petrol, and diesel.

Biomass is one of the best sources of energy, as it doesn’t produce any air pollution or greenhouse gases. Biomass can be found in different forms such as trees, wood, agricultural wastes, etc.

In a broad sense, biomass can be defined as the organic material that can be used to produce energy in the form of heat, electricity, or mechanical energy. The biomass can be used as a fuel and can be burned in the boiler to produce heat and electricity, and also it can also be converted to diesel and petrol in the gasifier.

Biomass is widely used as a fuel in all types of machines such as cooking stoves, fireplaces, furnaces, heaters, boilers, etc. Biomass can also be used as a primary energy source and it is one of the best energy sources that have multiple uses.

Types of biomass

Trees and wood are the most important source of biomass, but there are other types of biomass that are also very important. One of them is agricultural waste, which is a rich source of biomass. Other types of biomass are sugar cane, rice, palm, etc.

Methods for the conversion of biomass into fuels

The most common methods for the conversion of biomass into fuels are:

 Direct Combustion

Waste products like wood waste, crop residue, and municipal solid waste are burnt in a confined container. The heat produced is utilized in the boiler to produce steam that can run the turbine generator. And these generators produce an electric current.

 Fermentation

 Biofuel such as ethanol (alcohol) is a replacement for gasoline. It is obtained by fermentation of biomass using enzymes and by decomposition through bacterial action in the absence of oxygen. The rotting of biomass in a closed tank called a digester produces Biogas which is used for cooking and heating.

Energy from Waste Products

Advantages of biomass energy

This is the easiest and most commonly used source of energy. But nowadays, many people have started to switch over to biomass because of its cost and sustainability. Here are some advantages of biomass energy
