Plant Stem Diagram
Vertical Cross-Section
In this Diagram:
- Epidermis: The outermost layer, a single cell thick, protecting the stem from water loss, mechanical damage, and pathogens.
- Cortex: The tissue between the epidermis and the vascular tissue, providing support, storage, and photosynthesis in some cases. It may contain various specialized cells like collenchyma for support or parenchyma for food storage.
- Vascular Tissue: Xylem and phloem are arranged in bundles, responsible for transporting water, nutrients, and sugars throughout the plant.
- Pith: The central region of the stem, often filled with parenchyma cells for storage or air spaces for buoyancy and insulation.
Horizontal Cross-Section
In this Diagram:
- Vascular bundles: Appearing as discrete dots or clusters, these bundles contain xylem and phloem tissues arranged in various patterns depending on the plant species.
- Pith: The central region, that is visible as a lighter-colored area.
