What is World Wide Web? – Components of World Wide Web

The World Wide Web (WWW) is a collection of interconnected documents and computer networks that use the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). HTTP is a set of conventions for controlling the transfer of information via the Internet from a server computer to a client computer, and back again.

The internet is the worldwide network of public and private computer networks that use the TCP/IP suite of protocols to connect millions of computers together.

History of WWW

In 1989, English scientist Tim Berners-Lee proposed the idea of hypertext, which later evolved into the world wide web.

He developed the first version of what would become the world wide web while working at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

In 1991, he released a proposal called “Information Management” to describe his vision of how information should be organized and accessed online.

Components of WWW

There are different components of www.

URL

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. A website’s URL is its address, or location, on the web. URLs make it easier to find websites and they help search engines understand what each page is about. You can use a browser’s back button to return to a previous webpage.

HTTP

HTTP stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol and is a protocol used to transfer data over the internet.

Domain Name System

A domain name is a unique identifier assigned to each host on the Internet. Each host has a domain name associated with its IP address. A domain name identifies a specific host or service on the Internet.

Hosts are identified by their domain names, which follow the rules defined by the Domain Name System (DNS). DNS translates human-readable domain names into the corresponding IP addresses.

HTML

HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. HTML is what makes websites look nice and readable. It tells different web browsers how to display text, images, videos, and links on a webpage. HTML tags tell the web browser where to put things on the page.

XHTML

XHTML stands for Extensible Hypertext Markup Language. It is a standard markup language for web pages. XHTML is based on HTML 4.01 and was developed by the World Wide Web Consortium. XHTML is a strict subset of XML, which means that it uses tags similar to those used in HTML, but adds some additional tags and attributes.
